Polycarbonate vs. Acrylic: Choosing the Right Clear Plastic

Polycarbonate vs. Acrylic: Choosing the Right Clear Plastic

For applications requiring transparency, two plastics often come to mind: Polycarbonate (PC) and Acrylic (PMMA).

Both are popular but serve very different purposes.

Understanding the difference between PC vs PMMA is crucial for choosing the right material for your application.

The primary trade-off is between strength and clarity. Polycarbonate is incredibly strong

and impact-resistant—it is virtually unbreakable and is often used for bullet-resistant glass, safety shields,

and tough sporting goods. However, it scratches easily and can yellow over time

when exposed to UV light without a protective coating. Acrylic, on the other hand,

boasts superior optical clarity and gloss, better UV resistance, and is more scratch-resistant.

It is the material of choice for aquariums, signage, and lenses where aesthetics are paramount.

Cost is another factor; acrylic is generally less expensive than polycarbonate.

If your primary need is optical clarity and weather resistance for a static display, choose Acrylic.

If you need a durable, impact-resistant component that must withstand force, Polycarbonate is the winner.
