The Engineer's Guide to Plastic Material Selection
Selecting the wrong plastic resin is a costly mistake that can lead to product failure, recalls,
and unhappy customers. A systematic approach to plastic material selection is therefore
one of the most critical steps in the design process. This guide outlines the key factors to consider.
First, define the operating environment. What are the extreme temperatures? Will the part be exposed to chemicals,
UV light, or constant friction? For example, a part under the hood of a car needs high heat resistance (e.g., Nylon),
while a garden tool requires UV stability. Second, consider mechanical stresses.
Does the part need to be flexible (like LDPE) or rigid and impact-resistant (like Polycarbonate)?
Finally, balance performance with cost and manufacturability.
A high-performance plastic like PEEK might be overkill for a low-stress consumer product.
Can the part be easily injection molded? Always consult with plastic raw material suppliers
and manufacturers early on. They can provide valuable data sheets and recommend
cost-effective alternatives that meet your specifications, ensuring your product is both high-quality and profitable.
