Melt index, the full name of melt flow index, or melt flow rate, is a numerical value that indicates the fluidity of plastic materials during processing. It is formulated by the American Society for Measurement Standards (ASTM) according to the method used by DuPont to identify the characteristics of plastics.
The test method is to firstly let the plastic pellets melt into a plastic fluid within a certain time (10 minutes), under a certain temperature and pressure (various material standards are different), and then flow out through a 2.1mm diameter tube in grams (g). The larger the value, the better the processing fluidity of the plastic material, and vice versa.
The most commonly used test standard is ASTM D 1238, and the measuring instrument for this test standard is a Melt Indexer. Unit: g/10min
The melt index affects the performance of the plastic. Generally, plastic raw materials with high melt index have high fluidity, convenient molding and processing, and good stiffness and barrier properties; impact resistance, environmental stress crack resistance, outdoor properties, and chemical resistance properties are poor; the smaller the melt index, the fracture. Strength, hardness, toughness, aging resistance and other properties have been improved.
